Exploring Love Amidst the Clouds: An Engagement Session on the Blue Ridge Parkway
As a North Carolina wedding photographer, there are few places more captivating for an engagement session than the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway. The breathtaking beauty of this place serves as the perfect backdrop amidst the moody, cloudy skies, making it a truly unique and unforgettable experience. I have been on the parkway countless times for elopements and sessions, and it never fails to bring a different vibe to us!
Even better? The parkway in the summer.
The Allure of Summer
As we embarked on our hike, we found ourselves embraced by nature. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a wonderland for engagement photography, and this location here specially stands out as an incredible location if you are looking for mountain for your photos. The rich, vibrant colors of summer serve as a stunning contrast to the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape. The lush green fields and dense forests provide an idyllic setting, making every shot come alive with love and romance.
One of my FAVORITE sights is….watching low clouds drift over mountain tops, and we got to witness such wild beauty in this session with Tatyana & Areck.
On the day of the engagement session, the weather had a mind of its own. Thick clouds loomed overhead, casting a moody ambiance over the landscape. While some may shy away from cloudy weather for photoshoots, as a photographer, I know that embracing these conditions can lead to extraordinary results. (it never fails too!) The ever-changing light and dramatic skies set the stage for a visually stunning time – especially when the sun set! We couldn’t believe how the skies popped!
The Magic of Mountains
Nestled along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Black Balsam Knob is a hidden gem and one of the best places in North Carolina to have your engagement session. With its vast expanse of wildflowers and grassy knolls, the area provides a dreamy and intimate setting for couples to celebrate their love. The rolling hills, dense forests, and distant vistas of the surrounding mountains add such a diverse look!
PLUS! To get to these views, one must only hike a short 10-15 hike that I would consider easy! It’s truly incredible to think you can get 360 degree mountain views with little effort to get there!
This mountain summit is located in the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina, part of the Appalachian Mountains.
You may ask…how is it different than other mountain tops? The vast open grassy bands and the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Great Balsam Mountains, make it stand out proudly on the parkway! It is one of my favorites because of this.
The name “Black Balsam Knob” is derived from the balsam fir trees that grow in the area and the dark appearance of the tree trunks. The knob stands at an elevation of approximately 6,214 feet above sea level, making it one of the higher peaks in the region.
The Sun’s Radiant Appearance

After a heart-pumping ascent, we explored the breathtaking scenery of Black Balsam Knob, something truly magical happened. Just when the clouds seemed to be claiming the day, the sun made a triumphant appearance, bursting through the mist and transforming the atmosphere entirely! We couldn’t believe it! The once moody setting was now bathed in warm, golden light, creating an enchanting contrast between the mystical and the radiant.
That is what I love about the parkway – the weather shifts constantly, so even rain can quickly come and go and bring with it moody fog and beautiful skies.
